EASY Paint Palette {Upcycled Egg Cartons}

Paint Palette

I LOVE letting the kids paint but I HATE the clean-up that can be involved.  Especially since the youngest two only paint for 10 minutes before exclaiming that they are “DONE!!”

In the past I’ve used various things to hold paint, each with certain “problems”:

  • Upcycled plastic lids – colors are blended within minutes (with the younger set) – which is followed by whining for more paint (even though there is a ton still, just yucky color).  The lids are recyclable/not biodegradable.
  • Paper plates – I despise using something new for a few minutes and then tossing, especially for something like this.
  • Regular plates – colors get blended, requires effort to clean, paint doesn’t always come off in the dishwasher.
  • My own plastic paint palette – tips relatively easy with kid “force”, requires effort to clean, AND I don’t always like to share my stuff:)

I’m a container hoarder by nature – you know, I might use the container for some craft, project, etc. in the future, right? – so egg cartons I typically keep.  And, they work PERFECT – paint is separated, I don’t feel guilty throwing it away after, and it requires no washing.  Win, win, win.

Other tips to make painting with kids easier?

  • Skip the paint shirts and go bare (up to a certain age, of course).
  • Use baby wipes to clean brushes between colors.  We can get away with one wipe per kiddo per painting session so this makes me feel not so bad about the waste factor:)

By the way, this is the kind of post where I feel awkward putting it out there assuming most people will think “Really!?!  Isn’t this the obvious solution?”  And, it probably is to most of you clever mamas…but for those who haven’t utilized this “method” maybe it will make you want to paint with your kids more often because clean-up is just a little bit easier.

This would make me happy!

Thanks for taking a look.
