Rubber Ducky 1st Birthday Party

Little Man's Cake

Little Man’s PERSONAL Cake

Little Man will be TWO in April – I figured it was time to post about his first birthday!

I was not planning to do much for his birthday – a cake, a couple presents, etc.  As I explained when describing Loodle’s Honey Bee Party, while working as an architect I was BUSY – as in limited decorations, a quickly “decorated” cake, and barely wrapped gifts.  I was happy when I a) made it home at a reasonable time on the girls’ birthdays AND b) had cakes made (or bought).

Literraly two days before his birthday I decided to commit to a THEME.  “Rubber Ducky” popped into my head as something cute…plus I wanted to save the Big Boy Themes (i.e. Trucks, Sports, Cars, etc.) for when he was walking.  {All of my children waited to walk until 13-15 months.}  What sealed the deal though was that I found the recipe for this adorable punch:

The Punch

Isn’t that RIDICULOUSLY cute!!  I couldn’t find blue Kool-Aid at the time so used a jug of Hawaiian Punch (?? I think thats what it was called:)  BTW – Pineapple Sherbert = not so great in my opinion.  It made the punch but no one wanted it by itself…even with chocolate syrup.

I didn’t look for any ideas for cakes because this had popped into my head:

The Bath Tub CakeThe bubbles are mini-marshmallows:)  Not being expert at cake decorating (or even proficient actually:)  I opted to use stacked graham crackers covered with frosting to make the faucet and soap bar.  Amateur looking, no doubt, but still fun I think.

It was a small get-together (just our immediate family, next-door grandma and grandpa, and my brother and sister-in-law) so Little Man and the Silly Sisters got plenty of attention.  The “center pieces” were bowls of colored water with rubber duckies floating in them.  This provided an excellent activity for the kiddos too:

Already had the onesie that said: "Chicks dig me!" I figured chicks vs. ducky...pretty much the same, right???

The weather last April was AMAZING.  We were able to eat outside…which made first cake clean-up easy.

Eating Cake

I can’t believe its been almost a year… my darn kids are growing up WAY TOO FAST.  Little Man already looks like a full-blown preschooler.  And – considering I got my first drawn-out, slightly considerably whiny “MOM” just today – he’s definitely starting to act like one!

The Family

It was a great day.  Or, as the cheesy part of me feels urged to type – Everything was Ducky!

Thanks for taking a look!

{Frugally} Fighting FRUMP: Skin Care {February}

Fighting Frump Feb

My PERSONAL CHALLENGE for 2013??  Fighting Frump – on a  limited budget, of course!  You can read more about why HERE.

February – Skin Care

(or “I am SO NOT in my 20’s any  more…”)

First, a lesson learned…don’t promise in a blog post to be back “NEXT WEEK”.  It makes you feel like crap when three weeks of life happen and you’ve been MIA.  For the record, nothing traumatic happened just lots of family/daycare stuff going on.  This includes 2 daycare babies that aren’t cooperating with nap-time blogging AND Little Man who has extended his pre-bed Mommy snuggling ritual to a whopping 40 minutes.  While it gets drawn out (aka – occasionally tedious), I’ll take those snuggles and skip blogging any day (and indeed I have, huh??)

A quick update on January’s Diet & Nutrition Goals – for the most part I’m doing well! Drinking more water, less pop.  Watching portion sizes.  Valentine’s Day – and the associated candies – have not been kind to me.  Or, more accurately, I’VE not been kind to me by way of Valentines Candy:)  But, its all about moving forward right?

On to the fun stuff…

I’ve NEVER been good about skin care.  In fact, before February I (shamefully) admit that most nights I slept in my make-up.  SUCH a bad habit.

So, I decided to jump start a new take/outlook on skin care.  In a complete 180 degree shift from my normal frugal/cheap self I INVESTED IN HIGH END PRODUCTS.

Here’s my thought process:

  1. My skin is the ONE thing that I can’t get a “re-do” with when it comes to Fighting Frump.  Well, that and my teeth:)  Hair I can grow out/dye, wardrobes can be rebuilt BUT your skin is kind-of a one-shot thing.  Granted you can improve your skin but if it is severely damaged/not taken care of that’s hard to fix.
  2. By buying expensive products I ensure that my cheap self will use them!  Otherwise I’d feel horribly guilty – not so fun.
  3. I didn’t really know what I needed, should be doing, etc.  My internet searches weren’t all that helpful – although they were admittedly short – so asking for advice really helped.

I ended up getting Clinique’s 3-step cleansing process (products?) along with some samples of other stuff.  AND I’VE FALLEN IN LOVE!!  My skin, after only 3 1/2 weeks, looks so much better.  Smoother, more supple, decreased pore size…its just great.  I’ve fortunately never had bad skin but now I’d say its looking great.

Could I have gotten away with cheaper stuff?  Of course, but knowing me I would have spent 45 minutes in the big box aisles pondering my decisions, bought something because it was cheap, not liked it, and had it sit in my cupboard NOT being used.

This is just one of those instances where spending a bit a decent chunk more upfront, in my opinion, will mean spending less in the end (or at least having great looking skin!)

I’m still working on body skin care…I just haven’t figured out my routine.  One HUGE problem area for me is my disgusting, cracked hard-working hands.  I have to wash my hands SO MUCH each day that they are always chapped.

So, to any readers willing to throw out suggestions…any body care products you’d recommend?  How about tricks/methods for keeping your hands from cracking/drying out?  ANY feedback would be appreciated!

Thanks for taking a look!

The LUNCH TIME Fiasco: Distracted Mommy Case File #2

The Lunch Time Fiasco

Little Man got me again…perhaps you remember The Baby Powder Incident?  Last week he topped it (at least in amount of clean-up required!!)

I think the pictures convey the story – don’t you??  This time I couldn’t  have stopped him sooner – both babies were H-U-N-G-R-Y and the only thing I was hearing was hysterical giggles from the Bigs.  The Bigs are always highly playful (read distracted and prone to spills:) during lunch so this wasn’t any warning.  I KNOW I looked at him only 30 seconds prior though!

Oh well, the photos SOOO make the clean-up worthwhile.

You’re probably wondering if he got a bath after, right?  He did (OF COURSE) but it had to wait until after daycare.  So, his sheets were washed also:)

Thanks for taking a look!

Blue Skies and Blessings,

Lindsey
